Pixily – Digitalizing Documents

This evening I attended Webinno 19 and tonight’s presentation winner was Pixily. Prasad Thammineni gave an excellent presentation outlining the benefits of digitalizing your documents with Pixily. At first I thought their business plan was absurd, mainly because Pixily has some major costs including the cost to mail in (and back) your documents, the costs (machines, labor) to convert your documents to digital files and the costs of the buildings where the scanning is performed.  However, thinking about the model a bit more it actually hooks you in for a very long term subscription.  Once your documents are uploaded you obviously want long term access to your files, which requires a monthly subscription.  My guess is most of the customer costs are within the first few months (of a new subscription) and after that everything is profit.

What I like most about Pixily is the ability to search for content within those documents – this definitely makes it easier to locate my files stored in those sturdy PBR boxes.  It’s also a heck of a lot easier to just stuff a few envelopes and mail it to Pixily (and then search online) rather than shuffle through those documents for what I need.  I can then finally recycle those old receipts and free up some much needed space in my closet.  However, I’m not sure if I’m willing to commit to that long term subscription mainly because those 5 boxes probably only have 3 pages of important information.
